Tribute of Gandhi Ashram Trust : We remember for their contribution


Barrister Hemanta Kumar Ghose

Born on December 18, 1885, at Jayag, Noakhali. He completed his Bar-at-Law degree from London. He was practicing at the Lucknow High Court in India, while Mahatma Gandhi visited Noakhali. He donated all his properties at Jayag to the Mahatma's cause, and formed the Ambika Kaliganga Charitable Trust in 1947, which was registered in 1949. In 1975, it was renamed as Gandhi Ashram Trust by an ordinance of the Government of Bangladesh. The head office of GAT is situated at the birthplace of Barrister Hemanta Kumar Ghos, who breathed his last on January 28, 1972, in New Delhi, India.


Charu Chowdhury

Born in Jainta under Sylhet district, he left home in 1921 inspired by Gandhiji's ideology and came to Noakhali in1946 with the peace mission of the Mahatma. Mr. Chowdhury was at Noakhali to fulfill his leader's wishes till his death on June 13, 1990. He was the founding secretary of the Gandhi Ashram Trust.

Debendra Narayan Sarker
Born in Faridpur, he came in Noakhali with Gandhiji. He stayed in Noakhali to continue the peace mission's activities. In 1971, he was killed by the Pakistani army during his prayer at the present GAT campus.

Madan Mohan Chattopadhya

Born in Hooghly of west Bengal, he joined in the non-cooperation movement in 1921 and came to Noakhali with the peace mission and staying on till he was killed by the collaborators of Pakistani army during the liberation war of Bangladesh.


Viswa Ranjan Sen

Born in Faridpur of Bangladesh, he came to Noakhali during the communal riots in 1946 as part of an advance party of gandhiji's peace mission. He stayed at Koakhali for a long time. After independence of Bangladesh, he went Brahman Baria and established a Khadi institution there. In 1996 he breathed his last in Calcutta.

Reddi Palli Sattyanarayan
Born in Andhra Pradesh of India. He came to Noakhali in 1946. He server the people of Noakhali with his own income from homoeopathy and constructed many bridges, culverts, roads, houses, etc. for the people of Ramgonj thana. He died on June 10, 1991, at Paniala.


Ranjan Kumar Dutta

Born in Jessore of Bangladesh, he was an active worker of the non-cooperation and non-violence movements. In 1946, he came to Noakhali with the peace mission. In 1997 he breathed his last in India.


Ajit Kumar Dey

Born in Hooghly, he came to Noakhali with Gandhiji in 1946 and stayed on till he was assassinated by some miscreants in 1972. He was also a freedom fighter of Bangladesh.


Jiban K. Saha

Born in West Bengal of India, he joined the peace mission of gandhiji in 1946 and stayed in Noakhali for a long period. In 1971, he was killed by the Pakistani army at Kulaura in Sylhet.


Sadhendra Nath Mitra

He was an ember Gandhiji's peace mission and also came to Noakhali in 1946. He died of ill health within a few days of Gandhiji's assassination.


Bishop Zoachim Rozario

Present development activities of GAT were initiated by Bishop Zoachim Rozario. He was also an honourable member of GAT development committee. Till his death, he provided tremendous cooperation to GAT for its upliftment. He breathed his last in 1996.
